Jul 23, 2008 - Chefs plan national celebration of local food
Michael Stadtlander was in Italy at a slow food festival, celebrating
the local wine and cuisine, when he thought, “Why not do this in
Canada?” He worked on the idea with other chefs and together they came up with
the first Canadian Chefs’ Congress, scheduled for Sept. 21–22 on
Stadtlander’s Eigensinn Farm in Singhampton, near Collingwood, about a
two-hour drive northwest from Toronto.

Aug 5, 2008 - B.C.-based company building restaurant chain in Ontario
A company based in British Columbia is set to open a $7-million
four-level combination pub and nightclub, licensed for 1,200 patrons,
in Toronto's downtown entertainment district in late fall. This will be Gibbons Hospitality Group's third London Tap House, all of
them in Ontario. The first opened in London, about 21 months ago, and
the second in Hamilton in May.

Jul 15, 2008 - Hotel’s roof a hive of activity
Honey harvested from the beehives on the roof of the Royal York hotel in Toronto are used with salad dressing, soup, pastry, baking, ice cream, carrots, and poultry. The hotel hopes its roof-top hives eventually supply 700 pounds of honey per year.

Alberta has made changes to its foreign workers nominee program, designed to draw more workers from other countries to the province. Alberta's program is referred to as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee
Program (AINP) and allows family members of
employer-sponsored workers to also apply for permanent resident visas.

Albertans will no longer have to wait until they go to a restaurant to
find out whether it meets the province's standards for cleanliness and
hygiene based on hand washing, food prep and storage. As of Canada Day, Alberta Health and Wellness-implemented inspection
test results are supposed to be posted on the website of each region.

Another set of Nova Scotia chefs has returned with accolades from the James Beard House audience. Michael Howell (Tempest), Martin Ruiz Salvador (Fleur de Sel), Craig
Flinn (Chives), Dennis Johnston (Fid) and Ray Bear (Bear) presented a
sampling of flavours from Nova Scotia Aug. 7 at the famed supper club
in Manhattan.
